Route Difficulty and fitness
How fit do I need to be to join you?
Walking on the coastal path and inland on the moors requires a reasonable level of fitness. A lot of the routes include sections which feature steep climbs and descents over rocky ground, there will be stiles and boulders to climb over and, given the nature of coastal walking, the route will often be close to the cliff edge.
How far is the walk each day?
Depending on which route you choose we cover anything from 7 to 11 miles per day. The mileages for the day might seem reasonably modest but walking on the coastal path is much slower than on flat ground.
How many hours is the walk each day?
We will be walking for up to approximately 6 hours a day but our walking pace will be determined by the slowest walker, and the group is small. The idea of the walks is to immerse ourselves in the landscape and enjoy the beauty, so the pace will be leisurely.
Are there regular stops throughout the day?
We will be stopping to look at wildlife and history along the way and there are plenty of opportunities for breaks, or to take photos.
What if I need a toilet break?
There are a number of public toilets along the route which I will be pointing out as we pass, but please be aware there are several long stretches with no toilet facilities! I will warn you well in advance of these stretches.
Preparation
Do I need to do any training before I come?
It’s a good idea to have completed some longer distance walks (7-11 miles) before coming on your holiday and remember that we will be walking for several days in a row, however there is a rest day in the middle of the week to let you recuperate!
Equipment to bring
What should I bring to wear on my feet to walk in?
Probably the most important thing to bring is a good pair of walking boots or shoes, that are reasonably waterproof and have a good grip. Make sure they are well ‘worn in’ before your holiday to prevent blisters!
What should I bring to wear whilst out walking?
Given the unpredictable British weather a good set of waterproofs is highly recommended, along with a sun hat and sun cream for very sunny days! If you’re walking in spring, autumn or winter then make sure you pack a warm hat and gloves as it can get cold, especially if it’s windy. It is better to wear layers whilst walking so they can be added or removed as the temperature fluctuates, and non cotton fabrics are much better at drying quickly after rain.
What else should I bring for walking?
A day sack or rucksack that is sufficient to carry your waterproofs, personal items and most importantly lunch and a water container! Other possible items include binoculars and cameras, walking poles if you use them, and anything else you would normally take on a day walk.
Safety
How safe is the walking?
The routes for our walks will predominantly follow either the South West Coast Path or public rights of way, but there will be occasions when we use other paths and permissive routes. It is important to understand the obvious dangers when using the coastal footpath and other paths, and for the possibility of slips, trips and falls when using rough, uneven or slippery routes.
Every effort will be made to make sure your holiday is safe and enjoyable – I know the routes extremely well and will point out any obvious dangers as we walk. I am a trained First Aider and member of the Lands’ End Coastguard Team, so fully trained to deal with any emergency. I also carry a Garmin inReach GPS for communication in the unlikely event of an emergency in remote areas with no mobile phone signal.
If you have any further questions then please don’t hesitate to contact us – we will be more than happy to help.
